ELGIN, S.C. --- The Tusculum College women's golf team posted a team score of 315 and is tied for ninth place after the opening day of the 2016 Newberry College Regional Preview. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held at The Members Club of Woodcreek, which will be the host venue for the 2017 NCAA Division II South Region Championship this May.
Four Pioneers shot in the 70's, led by senior Taylor Lambertsen, who carded a 78 and is tied for 26th place. The trio of Ciara Rattana, Taylor White and Cydney Murrell each posted rounds of 79 and are tied for 31st place, while Katie Tomassoni is one shot off that pace with 80 and is tied for 41st.
This week's 12-team tournament field features five programs that are ranked in the Golfstat NCAA II head-to-head standings.
Florida Tech and West Florida, who are ranked 12th and 15th in the country respectively, share the first round lead at 294. Nova Southeastern, the No. 7 team in the nation, is in third place with 298, while fourth-ranked Rollins shot 299 and is fourth in the team title chase. Florida Southern is fifth with 306, followed by Newberry (309), Limestone (311), Carson-Newman (313), Tusculum (315) and Lee (315) make up the top-10. Shorter is 11th with 318, while Wingate rounds out the field with 321.
Individually, West Florida's Palom Vaccaro has the first round lead after her three-under par 69. She leads by two shots over teammate Lauren Lamm and Florida Tech's Sarah Thomas who fired one-under 71.
The final round will be played on Tuesday.
