Tomassoni shoots 71 to tie Classic record, Pioneers second to open Tusculum Fall Classic

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College sophomore Katie Tomassoni fired a one-under par 71 and has the first round lead of the 11th annual Tusculum Fall Classic which is being held at Link Hills Country Club.

The Pioneers, who are the defending champions of this event, finished Monday's opening round with 303 and is one shot behind day one leader Lenoir-Rhyne University who carded a 302.  Milligan College is third with 304, while Lincoln Memorial University sits in fourth place with 305.  Spartanburg Methodist College is fifth with 317, followed by Tusculum B (320) and Milligan B (342) to round out the team scoring.

Tomassoni's 71 ties former TC great Shannon Palenkas for the lowest first round score of the Fall Classic as the TC Sports Hall of Famer achieved the feat in the 2006 event.  The 71 is also the seventh-lowest 18-hole score in program history.  She posted a three-under par 33 on her inward nine before posting bogeys on the 10th and 12th holes.

Tomassoni holds a one-shot lead over Lenoir-Rhyne's Abbey Hartsell, who recorded an even par 72.  LMU's Abigail Evans is third with 73, while L-R's Chelsean Mansell is fourth with 74.  The Milligan duo of Michaela Matheson and Ann Sullivan, as well as Brooke Hutto of Spartanburg Methodist are locked in a three-way tie for fifth place at 75.

Tusculum's Taylor White is tied for eighth place with 76, while Ciara Rattana shot 77 and is tied for 11th place.  Cydney Murrell posted a 79 and is tied for 19th place, while Taylor Lambertsen rounded out the TC scoring with an 81 (T29th).

For Tusculum B, senior Lindsay Butler shot a career-best 78 and is tied for 13th.  Sophomore Kelsey Haun and rookie Maggienella Basile are tied for 22nd with 80.  Blythe Scrivner shot an 82 and is tied for 31st place while Sayre Hopper posted a 91 and is 39th.

Tusculum sophomore Trista Holder fired an 87 and is in 36th place, playing as an individual competitor.

The final round of the tournament will be held on Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. at Link Hills, the site of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championship.
