CINCINNATI, Ohio --- Tusculum College women's golfer Katie Tomassoni finished runner-up at the 101st annual Greater Cincinnati Women's Amateur Championship, which was held last week at Western Hills Country Club.
 
Tomassoni, a rising sophomore for the Pioneers, qualified for the championship flight as the No. 10 seed.  She won her opening match 4 & 2 to advance to the quarterfinals for a second time in her four appearances in the tournament.

In the quarterfinals, she upset No. 2 seed and two-time defending champion Lynn Thompson, 4 & 2.  Tomassoni rallied from an early deficit against the three-time Senior Met Champion as Katie won six holes in a row to go 5-up through 11 holes.  She clinched the match by winning on the 16th hole.

She outlasted No. 3 seed Alyssa Akiyama in the semifinals by winning on the second playoff hole.  Tomassoni led 6-up after nine holes, but Akiyama rallied on the inward nine at tied the match on the 17th hole.  On the second playoff hole, Tomassoni two-putted for par from nearly 50-feet, while Akiyama missed a five-footer to extend the match.

In last Thursday's championship, Tomassoni was defeated on the final hole by top-seed Katie Hallinan.  The match went back and forth as Tomassoni birdied the 16th hole to take a 1-up lead, but Hallinan battled back with birdies on the final two holes to capture the championship.

In her first Tusculum season, Tomassoni finished second on the team with her 80.22 scoring average.  She played in nine events where she posted four finishes in the top-10 and three times in the top-three.  She finished third at the Tusculum Fall Classic, Rendleman Invitational and the Pioneer Classic.  She also carded nine rounds in the 70s including a season-best 73 in the opening round of the Pioneer Classic.
