Tusculum's Maelyn Head named SAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum College's Maelyn Head has been named the South Atlantic Conference / AstroTurf Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

Head, a junior guard from Greeneville, Tennessee, averaged a team-best 18.7 points per game and shot a sizzling 10-of-14 (71.4%) from three-point territory in leading the Pioneers to a perfect 3-0 record last week.

She returned to the Tusculum line-up last Monday night against Catawba after being sideline for three weeks due to injury. Head poured in 16 points while shooting 6-of-6 from the free throw line as the Pioneers rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the Catawba Indians 71-68.

She followed that effort with 13 points in Wednesday's 71-57 wire-to-wire victory at Brevard.

Head scored a career-high 27 points, including nine in the overtime period in Tusculum's 82-73 victory over Wingate. She shot 7-of-13 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point land. She also went 8-of-10 from the charity stripe as the Pioneers swept the season series over the Bulldogs for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign.

On the week, Head shot 46.2 percent from the floor and 17-of-20 from the free throw line (85%). She also averaged 2.3 assists and two rebounds per game.

Tusculum (10-7, 8-6 SAC) returns to action on Wednesday night as the Pioneers take on conference front-runner Anderson for a 6 p.m. contest at the Abney Athletic Center on the Anderson, South Carolina campus.
