Smith qualifies for NCAA Division II Indoor Championship in men's triple jump

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University sophomore Daryl Smith Jr. qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship, the NCAA has announced.

Smith will compete in the men's triple jump, which will be contested on Saturday, March 9 at 6:35 p.m. (Eastern) at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Smith is seeded 14th in the field of 16 competitors after setting a school record on Jan. 20 with a mark of 15.22 meters (49 feet, 11 1/4 inches) at the Vanderbilt Invitational.

The Rockledge, Florida native, who placed second at the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship with a mark of 15.13 meters (49 feet, 7 3/4 inches), owns the top five indoor men's triple jump marks in program history and six of the top 10.

Smith is the first Tusculum field athlete to compete at an NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship, and the second to participate in an NCAA Championship event. In 2018, Yannick Rosalie competed in the triple jump at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Charlotte.

Tusculum has had at least one indoor national qualifier six times in the seven-year history of the program, while earning All-America honors in at least one event four of those six years.
