Guervil, McMillen to compete at NCAA Division II nationals

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University sophomore Widchard Guervil and senior Nicole McMillen have been selected to compete at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held May 23-25 at Texas A&M Kingsville.

Guervil is entered in the men's 100 meters and men's 200 meter dash events, while McMillen will compete in the women's steeplechase. Guervil is making his second straight trip to nationals, having earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 100 last season, while McMillen is the first Tusculum female athlete to compete at the NCAA Championships.

Guervil is seeded fifth in the field of 21 entrants in the 100 meters with a time of 10.31 seconds, and is seeded 10th in the 200 meters out of 24 competitors with a time of 20.86 seconds. Both of his qualifying marks were set at the University of South Carolina's Gamecock Invitational on April 13.

Guervil, the South Atlantic Conference champion in both the 100 and 200 meters, qualified for both events at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships last season. The Fort Myers, Florida native earned All-America honors with his eighth-place finish in the 100, and took 14th overall in the 200 meters. Guervil is a two-time All-American, having earned the honor with a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash at the 2018 Division II Indoor Championships.

McMillen is seeded fifth out of 20 runners in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:25.37. McMillen qualified for nationals with her performance late Friday night at the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, then rode all night from Chicago back to Greeneville to participate in Tusculum's commencement Saturday morning.

The Pickering, Ontario product was honored as the SAC Women's Track Athlete of the Year during the conference championships after sweeping gold in the 1500, 5000 and steeplechase. McMillen also won gold during the SAC Indoor Track & Field Championship in the mile run.

Preliminaries for the men's 100 meters will be on Thursday, May 23 at 8:10 p.m., followed immediately by the women's steeplechase prelims at 8:25 p.m. On Friday, May 24, the men's 200 prelims will be contested at 6:50 p.m. All times listed are Eastern Daylight Time, with local time one hour earlier.

A total of eight runners will advance to the finals in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, and 12 will qualify for the finals of the steeplechase. The steeplechase final will be at 8:15 p.m. on Friday, with the finals of the men's 100 meters on Saturday, May 25 at 7:45 p.m. and the men's 200 meters following at 8:55 p.m.
