Guervil qualifies for NCAA nationals for second straight year

INDIANAPOLIS --- Tusculum University sophomore sprinter Widchard Guervil will compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Pittsburg State University next week (Mar. 8-9) in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Guervil was one of 16 qualifiers in the men's 60 meter dash, which holds preliminaries on Friday, March 8 at 4:15 p.m. and finals on Saturday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Last year, Guervil finished fourth overall and earned All-America honors with a time of 6.70 in the finals. Guervil was clocked at 6.67 seconds in the preliminaries and was seeded second entering the finals.

Guervil's seed time of 6.79 seconds is the ninth-best of the 16 runners in the field and was set in the semifinals of the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational at ETSU on February 1. The Fort Myers, Florida native finished fourth in the 60 meters at the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships last weekend.

Guervil is one of three SAC athletes competing in the event, along with Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore P.J. Lotharp, who won the 60 at the SAC Championships and is seeded third overall at 6.73 seconds, and Carson-Newman sophomore Devon Moore who was fifth at the conference meet and is seeded along with Guervil at 6.79 seconds.

Also in the field is three-time NCAA Division II 60-meter champion and Olympic medalist Mobolade Ajomale of the Academy of Art, who is one of six runners returning to this year's field along with silver medalist Jonte Baker of Tiffin.

Guervil was a two-time All-American for Tusculum's track & field program as a freshman, also qualifying for outdoor nationals in the 100 and 200 meters and finishing eighth overall in the 100. He was honored as the Division II Southeast Region Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
