Guervil finishes fourth in 60 meters at NCAA Championship

PITTSBURG, Kan. --- Tusculum freshman sprinter Widchard Guervil finished fourth in the men's 60-meter dash at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at the Robert W. Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State University.

Guervil ran 6.70 seconds in the finals to earn All-America honors in the program's inaugural season. He finished behind Olympic medalist Mobolade Ajomale of the Academy of Art, who ran 6.60 seconds to earn his third straight 60-meter championship. Teammates Jonte Baker and Reginald Thomas of Tiffin finished second and third, respectively, with times of 6.61 and 6.68 seconds. Following Guervil in fifth place was NaRon Rollins of Pittsburg State (6.73 seconds), Marcus Parker of Eastern New Mexico (6.76), P.J. Lotharp of Lenoir-Rhyne (6.80) and Ricky Bell of Rogers State (6.83).

Guervil, the South Atlantic Conference champion in the 60 meters, was the only freshman competing in the event. He qualified for Saturday's finals by winning his heat and placing third overall in preliminaries with a time of 6.67 seconds. Ajomale and Baker were the top two seeds in the finals, with Thomas just behind Guervil in qualifying with a time of 6.68 seconds.

With the five points Guervil earned in the event, Tusculum finished tied for 33rd in the final team standings along with American International, Colorado Christian, McKendree and Tarleton State. A total of 57 schools had at least one point among the 81 that competed in the men's championship, with the Pioneers placing second among the six SAC schools that had at least one athlete in the meet.

Host Pittsburg State collected 49 points and won the men's team championship by one point over two-time defending champion Tiffin, with Adams State in third with 44 points.
