Two members of the Tusculum College softball team have been
selected as members of the All-South Atlantic Conference team, as
voted upon by the league's 12 head coaches and released
Wednesday.
Sophomore outfielder Carolyn Williamson was a second-team selection
while senior pitcher Kelly King was an honorable mention pick from
the Pioneers, who finished the season in fourth place in the league
with a 14-8 conference record.
Williamson led the Pioneers with a .304 average, and also paced the
team with 49 hits and four triples (tied for 2nd in the SAC). The
Knoxville native ranked third on the team in both runs scored with
25 and in walks with 11, and was tied for third with six stolen
bases. She did not commit an error in 73 chances in left field and
led the team with 12 multi-hit games.
In two seasons at Tusculum, Williamson has a career .297 average
with 102 hits, 59 runs scored and 12 doubles to go along with 24
stolen bases and 31 runs batted in.
King finished 18-11 with a 1.54 earned run average in 33
appearances (28 starts) for the Pioneers, and set a school
single-season record with eight shutouts. The righthander from
Nazareth, Pa. threw 199 2/3 innings in the regular season and
allowed 175 hits while striking out 114 and walking just 19
batters. In conference play, King went 8-5 with a 1.33 earned run
average and 57 strikeouts against eight walks in 89 2/3 innings of
work.
Overall, King led the SAC in innings pitched and complete games and
ranked second in shutouts and games pitched. Her 18 wins were
fourth-best in the league, while she was fifth in the conference in
both ERA and strikeouts. She allowed one earned run or less in nine
of her last 10 starts and walked no more than two batters in any of
her 28 starts.
In two seasons at Tusculum after transferring from Indiana (Pa.),
King has compiled a 32-18 record with a 1.80 earned run average and
a school-record 15 shutouts in 64 appearances (49 starts). King has
pitched 350 1/3 innings with the Pioneers, striking out 181 batters
while walking 62 and holding opponents to a .232 batting
average.
Kelli Hensley of Carson-Newman was named SAC Player of the Year,
while Lenoir-Rhyne's Maryann Hoskins was selected as Pitcher of the
Year. Freshman of the Year honors went to Anderson's Courtney
Czentnar, whose head coach Tommy Hewitt was voted as Coach of the
Year.
The Pioneers (30-22 overall) are the fourth seed in the Food Lion
SAC Tournament, and will face host Lincoln Memorial in the opening
round of the tournament on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Dorothy Neely
Field in Harrogate, Tenn.
