SOFTBALL RECORDS BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS, SWEEPS SAC TWIN-BILL WITH BREVARD

Lindsay Bridges GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Holli Cadenhead and Lindsay Bridges threw back-to-back shutouts and Savannah Ewing drove in a team-high three runs as the Tusculum College softball team (12-20, 3-5 SAC) swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Brevard College (14-12, 1-5 SAC) on Tuesday afternoon at Red Edmonds Field. Tusculum won game one 8-0 in six innings and completed the sweep with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Makenzie Loy led the way for the Pioneers with four hits in six at-bats, including a 3-for-3 performance in game one. Alex Kimbrell, Ashley Basilicato and Rachel Hopper each had three hits for TC as six Pioneers drove in at least one run. Basilicato also recorded her team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the season in game one with a 3-for-3 performance.

Cadenhead (7-12) made the start for the Pioneers in game one, and after the Tornados loaded the bases on four hits in the first stanza, pitched five no-hit innings to notch her second shutout of the season. Bridges (3-4) got the nod in game two for TC and allowed no runs on three hits in seven innings of work to record her second shutout in her last three starts.

Chelsi Mallory paced the Tornados with two hits on the day, both singles, as the Pioneers did not allow an extra base hit in the twin-bill. Jennifer Gift (7-7) went the distance for Brevard in game one, recording one strikeout in five and one-third innings of work. Liz Houser (7-5) allowed two unearned runs in six innings of work in game two while recording four strikeouts.

Game 1: Tusculum 8, Brevard 0 (6 innings)

The first game remained scoreless until the third inning when the Pioneers sent 11 batters to the plate and pushed across five runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead after three. Ewing opened the scoring for the Pioneers in the third inning with a one-out two-run double to center. Loy, Basilicato and Phlyscia Powell followed with three two-out RBI hits to push the lead to five runs.

TC's Jessica McKee stretched the lead to 6-0 with an RBI single in the fifth, which scored pinch-runner Tasha Morrell from third. Tusculum then plated two runs in the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule on an RBI single by Hopper and a walk-off double down the left field line by Basilicato.

Game 2: Tusculum 2, Brevard 0

Tusculum scored twice in the third inning of game two to record its first SAC sweep of the season. Ewing was responsible for both Pioneer runs in the inning as the freshman drove in Taylor MacDonald with a two-out RBI triple to left center, and was awarded home plate when the throw into third base went out of play. Bridges took advantage of the two-run lead, allowing one base runner over the final four innings to notch her third win of the season.

Tusculum returns to the diamond on Saturday when the Pioneers host North Greenville University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Red Edmonds Field.
