GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tusculum College softball team advanced to 6-9 after splitting with West Virginia State Sunday on Edmonds Field.
Game One: West Virginia State: 6 Tusculum: 2
The Yellow Jackets struck quickly with a run in the first inning when Charli Small was brought home by an error. TC quickly retaliated after a hit by Taylor MacDonald followed by a hit by Ashley Basilicato which brought MacDonald home for the 1-1 tie.
West Virginia State's bats continued to swing after a 2-1 lead where the Yellow Jackets had four runs in the sixth inning. Hitting two-straight doubles from Jenni Fowlkes and Bobbi Harper, the runs poured in for the 6-1 lead.
The Pioneers came back with a run in the sixth when Basilicato was brought home by a Katy Footitt hit.
Holly Cadenhead had the loss and is now 1-3 on the season while Samantha Kinder picked up the win and is 1-0.
Game Two: Tusculum: 7 West Virginia State: 6
The Yellow Jackets took the quick 6-0 lead in the second inning as Kris Taylor reached first on an error and stole a base. Fowlkes then doubled followed by five other hits as West Virginia State continued to score.
TC came back in their own second inning with two-straight doubles by Footitt and Kristina Neal edging closer at a 6-2 deficit. The Pioneers had one more run in the third when Basilicato was brought home by a sacrifice from Footitt.
At a 6-3 deficit in the fifth, the Pioneers battled back to take the 7-6 victory. MacDonald singled and then stole second to be in scoring position. Anna Johnson hit a double bringing MacDonald in for the 6-4 deficit. Basilicato singled and was followed with a Jennifer Turley single bringing Johnson home. Footitt doubled as Basilicato and Turley scored for the 7-6 victory.
The Pioneers will travel to Montreat College Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
