Welcome to the May 2018 issue of #PIONEERUPDATE, the monthly newsletter of the Tusculum Pioneer Club. #PIONEERUPDATE is provided exclusively to Pioneer Club members prior to being posted on our social media platforms, giving you a first look at what’s happening in Tusculum Athletics.
We are pleased to report that the Tusculum Athletics Department, including coaches and administration, has achieved 100% participation in giving to the Pioneer Club campaign this year. The Pioneer Club campaign has generated over $131,000 in cash gifts from 273 members with one month remaining in the 2017-2018 fiscal year. In addition, the Pioneer Club has generated over $97,000 in gift-in-kind donations this fiscal year. The Club is looking for 47 new members to join before June 30, 2018 to help reach our membership goal of 320 members. If you have not joined the Pioneer Club this year, we respectfully ask that you consider becoming a member to support our student-athletes.
Our biggest facility project continues to be the Tusculum Field of Dreams Project. We have been, and will continue, approaching student-athlete alumni, businesses, foundations, and friends of Tusculum Athletics for financial support of this endeavor. Donors to this project will be recognized as members of our Pioneer Club. For those of you interested in finding out more information on this project, please contact Blake Cantrell at bcantrell@tusculum.edu or 423-636-7331. We also have plans to complete a renovation of the Roger M. Nichols Tennis Complex by September 2018.
Our success is directly linked to our loyal Pioneer Club members and the great supporters of Tusculum and Pioneer Athletics. With your generous financial commitments, we are able to provide our student-athletes with a first-class experience.

Franziska Funke earns her third Academic All-District accolade, while Katarina Majorova and Annie McCullough garner their inaugural Academic All-District recognition. All three advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® national ballot with the winners being announced in June.

Funke named SAC Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum's Franziska Funkehas been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year announced league officials Thursday.
The SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to a student-athlete in each of the conference's 20 championship sports and is selected by the league's faculty athletic representatives.

Tomassoni named SAC Women's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum's Katie Tomassonihas been named this year's recipient of the South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year Award announced league officials Tuesday.

Daulton Martin named NCBWA All-American
PEMBROKE, N.C. --- Tusculum second baseman Daulton Martin has been named to the NCAA Division II All-America Second Team as selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA).
Martin, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, led the South Atlantic Conference with his .413 batting average while his 86 total hits are third in the nation and the second most by a DII left-handed hitter. The 2018 All-SAC first team choice is 25th in the country in batting average and his seven triples are a league-best and ninth in the nation. He is 15th in the land in doubles (20), 20th in total bases (132) and 27th in on-base percentage (.500).

Guervil named Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, among five Pioneers named All-Region
NEW ORLEANS, La. --- Tusculum freshman sprinter Widchard Guervil has been named the Division II Southeast Region Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the USTFCCCA announced Tuesday.
Guervil was one of five Pioneers named to the USTFCCCA Division II Men's Southeast All-Region team, ahead of Tusculum's debut at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week in Charlotte, North Carolina. Joining Guervil on the All-Region team were junior triple jumper Yannick Rosalie, along with three other freshman members of the Pioneers' 4x100-meter relay team in Jacob Acklin, Kedar Ashford and Xavier Billups.

Rosalie added to men's triple jump field at NCAA Division II Championship
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The NCAA notified Tusculum on Thursday that men's triple jumper Yannick Rosalie will be added to the field at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which begin next Thursday in Charlotte.
Rosalie was the first athlete on the outside of the field of 22 jumpers when it was announced on Monday, missing the final berth in the field by .01 meters (one-half inch). However, meet officials informed Tusculum head coach Lionel Nau Thursday morning that due to a scratch in another event, an athlete would be added from the next-strongest event, which is the men's triple jump.
The addition of Rosalie in the triple jump gives the Pioneers competitors in four of the 21 men's events at the NCAA Championships, along with Widchard Guervil in the 100 meters and 200 meters and the 4x100-meter relay team. The men's triple jump will be contested on Saturday, May 26 at 12:45 p.m.

Three Pioneers named to D2CCA All-Region Baseball Team
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. --- Three Tusculum student-athletes have been named to the 2018 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CAA) Baseball All-Southeast Region Team.
Charles Hall was named the first team utility pitcher while second baseman Daulton Martinand designated hitter Colby Skeen landed on the All-Region second team.

Hester, Mahaffey earn Academic All-District softball honors
AUSTIN, Texas --- Tusculum student-athletes Emily Hester and Morgan Mahaffey have been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District 3 Softball first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Hester and Mahaffey now advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot which will be announced in June.

323 named to Tusculum Athletic Director's Spring Honor Roll
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Three-hundred and twenty-three (323) student-athletes have been named to the 2018 Tusculum Athletic Director's Spring Honor Roll announced Doug Jones, Vice President of Student Success and Athletics.
To be selected to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, a student-athlete must accumulate either a spring semester or overall cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Tusculum student-athletes give back to the community
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Being a student-athlete can be demanding in terms of both energy and time. So, one might excuse them for focusing solely on academics and their respective sports team during college. But Tusculum athletic teams have been very active in giving back to the community, whether their involvement occurs on their own or within the team setting.
During the recently completed 2017-2018 academic year, Tusculum student-athletes, coaches and support staff have performed over 3,800 hours of community service.
Also, the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (PSAAC) raised over $5,200 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the organization's chosen philanthropy.
