Pioneers battle with Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- The Tusculum University men's volleyball team met up with Mount Olive for the second time in program history on Saturday, March 5. The Trojans made the four-set comeback to take the 2-0 series lead.

The Trojans (7-3) won by scores of 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, 26-24 to edge out the Pioneers (5-10).

Mount Olive had three reach double-digits in the kill column: Louie Hadfield (12), Tom Klotzbuecher (11), and Pedro Gonzalez (11). The latter fired .625 with only one attack error as well. Jack Yerxa handed out 39 assists, while Klotzbuecher and Chance Gallardo landed the service aces. Tristan Schraudner dug up 11 attempts for the match-high total. Both Hadfield and Klotzbuecher notched eight digs. At the net, Holden Maryott was credited with five total blocks (one solo, four assists).

Jake Whyte tallied the team-high for Tusculum in kills once again, landing 11, just ahead of Dane Loup's nine and Shaphar Grant's eight. Deklan Wingo notched seven kills on a .308 hitting clip. Shaun Kampshoff dished out 34 assists, while he (2) and Whyte (4) accounted for the aces. Whyte nearly had a double-double with his nine digs, followed by Taylor West with six. Wingo and Kampshoff are both credited with three total blocks (one solo, two assists).

Mount Olive ended the match with a .283 hitting percentage with 49 kills and 17 attack errors on 113 total attempts. Tusculum totaled 41 kills, 22 errors, and 105 swings for a .181 hitting percentage. The Pioneers led the match in aces (6-2), while the Trojans had the advantage in assists (44-39), digs (38-33), and total blocks (8.5-6).

Tusculum returns to Pioneer Arena for two matches next week, beginning with King on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
