Pioneers Take One Set in Battle Royale

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum men's volleyball team was defeated by King on Friday night in a four-set match, in spite of rounded efforts by the Pioneers.

The Tornado (9-9) won by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19 to win over the Pioneers (4-14). This is the third time that Tusculum has played to four sets, losing every contest.

King's Diego Marcano collected 17 kills, followed by 12 from Sean Kohlhase. Jack Sarnowski dished out 28 assists, while he and Marcano landed the Tornado's service aces. Defensively, Marcano also topped the dig category with eight, just ahead of six from Ryan Sumarsono. The net was guarded by Joshua Kim, who is credited with four block assists, and Douglas Florencio (one solo, three assists).

Shaun Kampshoff and Matteo Miselli had outstanding efforts in the match, landing 15 kills each. Kampshoff needed only three sets and fired at a .357 clip. Lucas Blanco finished with 33 assists in the loss, meanwhile Arthur Amorim and Hunter Walck picked up the Pioneer aces. Kampshoff was the frontrunner in the dig column, scooping up nine, ahead of Miselli's seven. Ivan Sosa and Peter Stewart added six apiece. Sosa made his presence known at the net, assisting on five blocks, followed by Kampshoff's trio.

King ended the match with a .268 hitting percentage with 49 kills and 19 attack errors in 112 total attempts. Tusculum totaled 43 kills, 26 errors, and 105 swings for a .162 hitting percentage. The Tornado led in assists (42-40) and total blocks (9-7), while the Pioneers collected more digs (36-29). The teams tied with a pair of aces.

Tusculum returns to action on Tuesday (March 10) at Bluefield College. First serve between the Pioneers and Rams is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
