Pioneers ranked ninth in first ITA Southeast Region poll of season

TEMPE, Ariz. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team is ranked ninth in the Southeast Region in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings, released Wednesday.

The Pioneers are receiving votes in the national poll, which includes four teams on Tusculum's 2020 spring schedule -- Wingate (4th), Indianapolis (12th), North Georgia (18th) and Queens (23rd).

The Pioneers finished 13-6 overall last season and 7-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Tusculum was ranked 29th in the final ITA Division II poll last season, with all six of its losses coming to teams ranked 34th or higher.

In the Southeast Region, Columbus State is the top-ranked team followed by Wingate, Lander, Flagler and North Georgia in the top five. The rest of the top 10 consists of Queens, Georgia College, Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Anderson.

Nationally, Barry is the number-one team in the preseason poll followed by Columbus State, West Florida, Wingate and Saint Leo.

The Pioneers will open their 2020 spring schedule on Sunday, Feb. 2 against 12th-ranked Indianapolis in a neutral-site match in Lexington, Kentucky. The next national team rankings will be unveiled on Feb. 19, and then weekly along with singles and doubles rankings starting March 18.
