BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2019-20 schedule by competing at the Hidden Dual Invitational on the campus of King University.
The Pioneers recorded 20 singles wins in 26 matches and took 10 out of 13 doubles contests in competition against West Virginia Wesleyan, Montreat and Bluefield College.
In singles, Marco Meon, Milan Jankovic and Jacco Mensinga each earned three victories. Meon beat Rodrigo Huarachi of Bluefield 6-4, 6-1, defeated Alexander Lyudinovskiy of West Virginia Wesleyan 6-2, 6-2 and James Kirkham of Montreat 6-1, 6-1. Jankovic also had three straight-set wins, beating Mark Batoon of Bluefield 6-1, 6-1, winning 6-3, 6-0 over Carlos Dodero of West Virginia Wesleyan and downing Enrique Smalley of Montreat 6-1, 6-1. Mensinga was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Tanaka Rushwaya of Bluefield, beat Thomas McIntosh of West Virginia Wesleyan 6-3, 6-2 and earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Grayson Chumley of Montreat.
Earning a pair of singles wins were Yago Fernandez, Frank Bonacia and Gabriel Yaguar. Fernandez won 1-6, 6-4, (10-8) over regionally-ranked Lukas Laipold of West Virginia Wesleyan, then defeated Jacob Summerville of Montreat 6-2, 6-0. Bonacia won 6-1, 6-1 over Michael Gutu of Bluefield and downed Franco Minoldo Garcia of Montreat by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Yaguar was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Huarachi and beat McIntosh by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) score.
Additional singles victories came from Rafael Sarasola, Vadzim Raitsou, David Kciuk, David Akinpetide and Leon Huck. Both Akinpetide and Raitsou rallied after losing the first set to capture victory in a 10-point tiebreaker.
In doubles, Fernandez teamed up with Tom Dillon for three victories for the Pioneers. The duo beat Satoshi Yamada and Huarachi of Bluefield 6-4, downed Garcia and Kirkham of Montreat 6-0, and beat Lyudinovskiy and Dodero of West Virginia Wesleyan by a 6-2 score. Mensinga and Jankovic had two wins, beating Guta and Rushwaya of Bluefield 6-1, and knocking off Montreat's team of Summerville and Chumley by a score of 6-0.
Akinpetide and Manuel Guedes de Almeida also had two wins, beating Laipold and McIntosh of West Virginia Wesleyan 7-5 and Gutu and Rushwaya of Bluefield 6-1, and Yaguar and Huck also claimed two wins with victories over Taylor Papworth and Anthony McIntosh of West Virginia Wesleyan by a score of 6-3, and downing Yamada and Huarachi of Bluefield 6-4. Also earning a doubles victory were Meon and Sarasola, who beat Nicolas Lopez Sanchez and Jovan Slijepcevic of Montreat 7-5.
Tusculum will play its lone dual match of the fall on Wednesday as the Pioneers host King at 3 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
