Decisive match goes to Newberry in 4-3 win over #35 Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry College won two of the final three singles matches to upset 35th-ranked Tusculum University 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Wolves (8-10, 2-3 SAC) captured the doubles point to open the match, then split the six singles contests to end the five-match winning streak for the Pioneers (8-3, 3-1 SAC).

In doubles, Newberry earned wins at flights one and two, with Tusculum's lone victory coming at flight three as Manuel Almeida and Fabian Paier beat Alex Amble and Lawrence Friedland 6-1.

Tusculum leveled the match at number-six singles where Gabriel Yaguar was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Friedland. Newberry went up 2-1 at flight four with a straight-set win, but 70th-ranked Yago Fernandez knotted the contest at 2-2 with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at flight two over Jose Navarro.

In a matchup of nationally-ranked singles players, seventh-ranked Edison Ambarzumjan of Newberry was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Tusculum's 33rd-ranked David Akinpetide as the Wolves regained the lead at 3-2. Marco Meon coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 win at flight five over Amble, leveling the score once again at 3-3.

The final singles match was at flight three, where Almeida took on the Wolves' Sean Nguyen and lost the first set 6-1. Almeida came back for a 6-1 win in the second set, but Nguyen won the third and deciding set 6-4 to clinch the match for Newberry.

Tusculum will regroup and head on the road for a match Wednesday afternoon at 24th-ranked Queens.
