Pioneers defeat Carson-Newman for fifth consecutive win

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University earned its fifth consecutive victory with a 7-0 shutout of Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 35th-ranked Pioneers (8-2, 3-0 SAC) defeated the Eagles (1-12, 0-4 SAC) for the 14th consecutive meeting and the 19th straight time in the regular season by winning four of the six singles matches in straight sets.

Tusculum earned the doubles team point with a sweep of Carson-Newman. At flight three, Manuel Almeida and Fabian Paier beat Joey Stiles and Victor Ireno 6-1, Jacco Mensinga and Yago Fernandez defeated Hernan Toledo and Jesus Bacete-Sanz 6-3 at flight two, and Gabriel Yaguar teamed with Tim Klee for a 7-5 win over Gabriel Dabdab and Rintaro Oka at flight one.

In singles, 70th-ranked Fernandez won 6-4, 6-0 over Toledo at flight one and Vadzim Raitsou won 6-1, 6-4 at flight three over Oka to push the Pioneers to a 3-0 lead. Almeida then delivered the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Dabdab at flight two. Tusculum closed out the match with three more wins, as Marco Meon beat Marc Bantel in a 10-6 tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 2-6, 6-2, Yaguar defeated Bacete-Sanz 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 at flight five and Paier downed Ireno 6-3, 6-3 at flight six.

Tusculum will remain home to host Newberry in a SAC match on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
