Pioneers win in final match to beat Anderson 4-3 in SAC opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Marco Meon won the final singles match for the second time in four days as Tusculum University beat Anderson University 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

Meon defeated Preston Morpeth at flight six by a 6-4, 6-3 score as the Pioneers (5-2, 1-0 SAC) came back to win four of six singles matches after losing the doubles point to the Trojans (7-4, 1-1 SAC).

David Akinpetide pulled his second upset of a nationally-ranked opponent this season when he defeated 23rd-ranked Ignacio Bidegain by a 6-3, 6-1 score at flight one.

Anderson won two of the three doubles matches to earn the team point, with Tusculum's lone win coming at flight three as Yago Fernandez and Jacco Mensinga beat Tomas Depaggio and Jeffrey Dayton by a 6-3 score.

After Akinpetide's victory tied the score at 1-1, the Pioneers went up 2-1 as Manuel Guedes de Almeida won 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 over Dayton at flight three. After the Trojans knotted the score at 2-2 with a straight-set win at flight five, Fernandez was a 6-1, 7-5 winnver over Spencer Brown at flight two to extend Tusculum's lead to 3-2.

Another win by the Trojans, coming at flight four, leveled the match at 3-3 and set up Meon for the decisive point. He earned a three-set victory on Wednesday in Tusculum's 4-3 win over Lee.

The Pioneers are on the road Friday at 2 p.m. at Johnson C. Smith.
