Pioneers compete at ITA Southeast Regional

SUMTER, S.C. --- Members of the Tusculum University men's tennis team participated in the Southeast Regional Small College ITA/Oracle Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

In singles action, the Pioneers received first-round victories from Yago Fernandez, who beat Gregory Normand of Mount Olive 6-3, 6-1, along with Vadzim Raitsou who downed Jose Navarro of Newberry 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-0.

In the consolation bracket, Gabriel Yaguar won 6-2, 6-2 over Jack Middleton of Mount Olive, and Lohithaksha Bathrinath was a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) winner over Alvaro Gil of USC Aiken.

In doubles, Bathrinath and Yaguar advanced to the round of 16 after opening with a 6-3 win against Luca Bolla and Rasmus Jonsson of Flagler, followed by a 6-3 victory against Antonio Sabugueiro and Tales Silva of USC Aiken.

Also earning a doubles win was the team of David Akinpetide and Fernandez, which beat Nathan Connelly and Noah Wallace of Georgia College by a 6-1 score.

The Pioneers will return to tournament action October 12-14 at the Grizzly Open, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
