#34 Pioneers fall to #27 Newberry 6-3 in regular-season finale

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Tusculum men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 6-3 loss at Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday.

The 34th-ranked Pioneers (14-7, 5-5 SAC) finished sixth in the final SAC standings, while the 27th-ranked Wolves (20-6, 7-3 SAC) tied for third place with Lincoln Memorial.

Newberry swept Tusculum in doubles, but the Pioneers picked up their first point at flight two singles as Tomas Kmetko defeated Jose Navarro 7-5, 6-1. The Wolves picked up three-set victories at flights one and five to clinch the match, but the Pioneers were able to earn two more wins as Tashique Kader defeated Angel Pizarro 8-2 at flight four, and Gabriel Yaguar downed Alex Amble 8-3 at flight six.

The SAC Championship tournament has expanded to an eight-team field this year, with quarterfinal matches hosted by the top four seeds on Wednesday, April 18. The semifinals will be played Friday, April 20 and the championship match on Saturday, April 21, all at the Cayce Tennis Center in Columbia, South Carolina.
