Singles sweep lifts #31 Tusculum to 7-2 win at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- Tusculum swept singles from Carson-Newman as the 31st-ranked Pioneers defeated the Eagles 7-2 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers (14-6, 5-4 SAC) trailed 2-1 after doubles against the Eagles (3-12, 1-8 SAC), but lost just one set in singles to snap a two-match losing streak.

Tusculum's doubles victory came at flight three, where Marco Meon and Eduardo Munoz defeated Marc Bantel and Taylor Barie by a score of 8-3.

In singles, Meon rallied from a set down to defeat Gabriel Dabdab 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at flight one, Tomas Kmetko downed Bantel 6-2, 6-3 at flight two and Yago Fernandez earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at flight three over Barie as the Pioneers went ahead 3-2 in the match.

At flight four, Tashique Kader posted a 7-6, 6-2 win over Kevin Mendes, with Jorge Cervantes delivering the deciding point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at flight five over Jesus Bacete-Sanz. Gabriel Yaguar closed out the match for the Pioneers by defeating Joseph Stiles 6-1, 6-1 at flight six.

At 5-4 in the conference, Tusculum is tied for fifth place with Anderson heading into Saturday's regular-season finale at Newberry. The Pioneers have clinched a berth in next week's SAC Championship tournament, with seeding to be determined following the conclusion of Saturday's conference matches.
