Doubles sweep sparks Pioneers to 6-3 win over Catawba

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- A sweep of doubles propelled Tusculum to a 6-3 victory over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (10-4, 1-2 SAC) split the six singles matches with the Indians (2-6, 0-3 SAC), but it was enough for Tusculum to earn its second straight victory overall and first league win of the season.

In doubles, Eduardo Munoz and Jorge Cervantes put Tusculum on the board with an 8-2 win over Samuel Schwarz and Adam Rocko at flight three, followed by an 8-4 victory by Toby de Klerk and Yago Fernandez against the Indians' Ryen Reid and Cason Hiers at flight two. At flight one, Tashique Kader and Gabriel Yaguar finished off the Tusculum sweep with an 8-6 victory over Catawba's duo of Lucas Miller and Luca Picci.

In singles, Tomas Kmetko extended the Tusculum lead to 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Miller at flight two, before Picci gave Catawba its first point with a win over Marco Meon at flight one. Reid beat Fernandez 7-6, 7-6 at flight three to help the Indians creep within 4-2, but Kader nailed down the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Schwarz at flight four. Hiers scored a win over Cervantes at flight five, and Yaguar defeated Rocko 7-5, 7-6 at flight six to close out the match.

The Pioneers are scheduled to return to action Wednesday afternoon at Lincoln Memorial.
