Pioneers fall in final match to Coker, 5-4

HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- Coker used a pair of tiebreaker wins in doubles and two three-set victories in singles to edge Tusculum 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon.

The Cobras (8-3) led 4-2 halfway through singles, but the Pioneers (8-3, 0-1 SAC) came back to knot the score at 4-4 behind wins from Tashique Kader at flight four and Jorge Cervantes at flight five. Coker then claimed the final point with a straight-set win at flight six to earn the victory in the conference opener for both teams.

All three doubles pro sets were decided 9-8 after going to a tiebreaker, with the Cobras winning at flights one and two and the Pioneers capturing a point at flight three as Cervantes and Tomas Kmetko beat Felix Schweyer and Simon Bergbom 7-3 in the tiebreaker.

In singles, Tusculum tied the match as Yago Fernandez defetaed Schweyer 6-3, 6-2 at flight three. After Coker won at flights one and two in three sets, the Pioneers came back as Kader downed Henrik Hellbe 6-1, 6-2 and Cervantes bested Bergbom 6-4, 6-1 at flight five, but Coker grabbed the decisive win at flight six.

The Pioneers will host Anderson on Wednesday at 2 p.m. to start a stretch of three home matches in four days.
