Pioneers capture victories over Assumption and Salem

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Tusculum men's tennis team earned a pair of victories on Wednesday, defeating Assumption 8-1 in a morning match and beating Salem 6-3 in the evening.

The Pioneers (8-1) will play Palm Beach Atlantic in their final match of spring break on Friday morning at 8 a.m.

Tusculum 8, Assumption 1
The Pioneers swept doubles from the Greyhounds (2-3), then won five of the six singles matches to earn the victory.

In doubles, Tomas Kmetko and Jorge Cervantes teamed for an 8-1 win over Ryan Foster and Reb Mariano at flight one, Toby de Klerk and Yago Fernandez beat Max Francis and Danny Waung 8-5 at flight two, and Gaston Aguilera and Fabian Paier downed Jameson Keppeler and Luke Whitehouse by an 8-1 score at flight three.

In singles, Mario Meon won 11-9 in a tiebreaker over Foster at flight one after splitting the first two sets 6-3 and 5-7. Gabriel Yaguar won 6-3, 6-0 at flight two over Francis, and de Klerk was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at flight three over Waung. At flight five, Gabriel Bernardi beat Keppler in a 10-8 tiebreaker after the first two sets were divided 6-1 and 3-6, while Steven Knowles won at flight six over Whitehouse by a score of 6-1, 6-4.

The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead after doubles and split the six singles matches with the Tigers, who fell to 4-9 with the loss.

In doubles, Meon and David Akinpetide defeated Carlos Padilla and Andres Padilla by an 8-1 score at flight one, Kmetko and Cervantes downed Ivan Arevalo and Landon Schultz-Zwahr 8-5 at flight two, and de Klerk and Fernandez earned an 8-1 win at flight three over Gregor Lainer and Patryk Garwacki.

In singles, Kmetko defeated Arevalo 6-2, 6-0 at flight one, Meon beat Andres Padilla 6-1, 6-0 at flight two and de Klerk won 7-5, 6-1 at flight five over Carlos Padilla.
