Pioneers slip past Chowan 5-4 in Hilton Head opener

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- Tusculum opened its annual spring break trip by edging Chowan 5-4 in men's tennis action Tuesday morning.

The Pioneers (6-1) and Hawks (4-3) split their six singles matches before competition moved to doubles, where Tusculum won two out of three to capture the match victory.

In singles, Marco Meon earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Adi Kaliakperov at flight two, Yago Fernandez defeated Mateusz Izycki 7-5, 6-3 at flight three, and Jorge Cervantes outlasted Mariano Yeh at flight four by winning a 10-5 tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 5-7 and 6-2.

In doubles, Cervantes teamed with Eduardo Munoz for an 8-6 win at flight three over Rafael Goncalves and Louis Proulx, before Fernandez and Toby de Klerk clinched the match with an 8-6 win over Izycki and Yeh at flight two.

Tusculum will play a pair of matches on Wednesday, facing Assumption at 10:30 Wednesday morning and Salem International at 5:30 in the afternoon.
