Pioneers defeated by Bluefield State in spring opener

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. --- Bluefield State rallied from a set down in three of its four singles victories as the Big Blues defeated Tusculum 6-3 in non-conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (4-1) trailed 2-1 after doubles and won the first set in five of the six singles matches. However, Bluefield State came back to win three of those matches and capture the victory.

In doubles play, the Pioneer team of Toby de Klerk and Yago Fernandez teamed up for an 8-4 win over Giorgi Datashvili and Arthur Figuiere at flight three to give Tusculum its first point of the match.

In singles, the Big Blues' Alex Rudenco at flight one, Datashvili at flight two and Pulido Ignacio at flight four all came back after dropping their first set to pick up victories. The Pioneers' lone singles wins came from Fernandez at flight three, by a 6-2, 6-4 score over Figuiere, and by Jorge Cervantes by a 6-2, 6-4 score over Lorenzo Panariti at flight six.

The Pioneers will return to action Sunday at 10 a.m. against Bellarmine at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
