Newberry rallies to defeat Tusculum, 5-4

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry overcame a deficit after doubles play to defeat Tusculum 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Saturday at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Wolves (15-3, 6-1 SAC) won four of six singles matches against the Pioneers (10-5, 5-2 SAC) after trailing 2-1 following doubles competition. Four of the singles contests went three sets, with Newberry winning three of the four matches.

In doubles, Tomas Kmetko and Toby de Klerk teamed for a 9-8 (7-2) win over Edison Ambarzumjan and Jordan Monosky at flight one, while Tashique Kader and Yago Fernandez combined for an 8-2 win at flight three over Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins.

In singles, Fernandez defeated Monosky 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-0 at flight two, and David Siegle earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Zeh at flight six. However, the Wolves won in three sets at flights one, three and five, with two of the third set wins by 7-5 scores and the third by 7-6.

Tusculum will be on the road for its next three matches, starting Tuesday at 2 p.m. at 42nd-ranked Wingate.
