Pioneers defeat Davis & Elkins 6-3 to wrap up Spring Break trip

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- Tusculum College defeated Davis & Elkins College 6-3 in the final match of the team's Spring Break trip Wednesday morning.

The Pioneers (8-4) won two of three doubles matches against the Senators (3-4) then used a pair of tiebreaker victories to win four of the six singles contests.

In doubles, Tashique Kader and Fabian Paier teamed for an 8-3 win over Jack Clifton and Tristram Spitsnaugle at flight two, while Eduardo Munoz and Gabriel Bernardi downed Matt Alexander and Cordel Bostic 8-4 at flight three.

In singles, Kader outlasted Ivan Bonderanko 6-7, 6-4, (10-5) at flight one and de Klerk edged Tare Mariga at flight two by a score of 5-7, 6-2, (10-8). Munoz also claimed a singles victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win at flight four over Alexander, while Bernardi defeated Jonathan Gainer in a pro set at flight six by an 8-2 score.

Earlier in the day on Wednesday, the Pioneers completed a match with 46th-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic that had been suspended due to curfew Tuesday night. Tusculum lost 6-3 as Tomas Kmetko and de Klerk beat Rafael Lenz and Bernardo Ferreira 8-6 at flight one in doubles, then each picked up a win in singles. Kmetko beat Pato Zarazua 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), (10-5) at flight one, and de Klerk defeated Hoffmann 6-2, 6-2 at flight three.

Tusculum will be back on the courts on Sunday at the Nichols Tennis Complex as the Pioneers host Anderson at 1 p.m. in a South Atlantic Conference match.
