Tusculum defeats Northwood 5-1 in Spring Break opener

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- Tusculum College defeated Northwood University 5-1 in non-conference men's tennis action Tuesday afternoon in the first of three Spring Break matches for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers (7-3) swept all three doubles matches from the Timberwolves (2-3) then won two of the first three singles contests to clinch the win.

In doubles, Tomas Kmetko and Toby de Klerk teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Austin Woody and Kobus Sauerman at flight one. At flight two, Tashique Kader and Leon Seiz beat Francois Sauerman and David Reinauer by an 8-5 score. Yago Fernandez and David Siegle won their match at flight three over Ivan Medvynskyi and Hayden Drury 8-5 to complete the Pioneers' doubles sweep.

In singles, Kmetko defeated Woody 6-1, 6-2 at flight one and de Klerk won 6-4, 6-4 over Reinauer at flight four to clinch the win for the Pioneers.

Tusculum returns to the courts Tuesday night to face Palm Beach Atlantic before wrapping up their trip Wednesday morning against Davis & Elkins.
