GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College
men's tennis team has earned the second seed in this weekend's
South Atlantic Conference Tournament and will begin play on Friday
morning in the semifinal round.
TC won its fifth conference championship in school history and
shared the award with Wingate University. The Bulldogs are the top
seed by virtue of their win against the Pioneers earlier this
season, and both teams earned byes into the semifinal round.
The Tournament is being hosted by Brevard College. The
quarterfinal round will be played on Thursday with third-seeded
Anderson taking on sixth-seeded Lincoln Memorial and fourth-seeded
Queens facing fifth-seeded Newberry. Both matches will begin at 9
a.m.
The Pioneers will face the winner of the Anderson/LMU matchup
while the Bulldogs will play either Queens or Newberry at 9 a.m. on
Friday. The winners of each semifinal match will face off in the
finals on Saturday at 9 a.m.
TC comes into the tournament with a 17-1 overall record and is
ranked 43rd in the latest ITA national rankings. Lukas Winkelmann
has anchored the top of the Pioneer lineup with a perfect 17-0
singles mark, and is also undefeated in doubles play with his
brother Jonas Winkelmann.
Lukas Winkelmann, ranked 10th in the latest ITA national
singles rankings, is riding a 50-match winning streak in regular
season singles play. He has also been named SAC Player of the Week
twice this season.
Nic Planchard and Jonas Winkelmann both own identical 14-4
singles records this season playing primarily in the second and
third flights. Leon Seiz is 15-3 playing primarily in the fourth
spot and Tashique Kader owns a 15-2 mark at number five. Toby De
Klerk has played primarily in the sixth position and owns an 8-3
mark, while David Siegle is 4-2 in that spot.
Kader and Seiz are 13-3 on the doubles side playing primarily
in the second flight, while de Klerk and Planchard own a 4-1 mark
in the third spot. Joseph Elphingstone and Siegle have also
partnered together in the third spot and they own a 3-1 record.
Overall TC is 45-9 in doubles play this season and 89-19 in singles
action.
The Pioneers own wins this season over both their potential
semifinal opponents. They topped Anderson 6-3 and Newberry 7-2 at
the Nichols Tennis Complex.
