Cervantes, Peiro earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors

AUSTIN, Texas --- Tusculum University student-athletes Pau Peiro and Edgar Cervantes have been named to the 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Academic All-District 3 first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Peiro earns his second straight Academic All-District accolade, while Cervantes make his inaugural appearance on the team.  The Tusculum duo advances to the Academic All-America® national ballot with the winners being announced in December.  The Academic All-District 3 Team is selected by members of CoSIDA representing colleges and universities in the South Atlantic Conference, Conference Carolinas and the Peach Belt Conference.

Peiro, a senior defender from Maramar, Spain, boasts a 3.90 cumulative grade point average while majoring in chemistry.  He is a member of the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, Tusculum Dean's List, President's List, Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Charles Oliver Gray Honor List.

On the pitch, Peiro has started on the back line for the Pioneers in all 15 matches this year and leads the team with 1,343 minutes played.  He scored a goal in Tusculum's 6-3 win over Catawba and has been credited for six shots this season.  The Tusculum defense has posted a 1.65 goals against average which includes a pair of shutouts.

Cervantes, a junior forward from Cancun, Mexico, has logged a 3.91 GPA with a double major in business administration and accounting.  He is a member of the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, Tusculum Dean's List, President's List, Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Charles Oliver Gray Honor Roll.

Cervantes is third on the team in both goals scored (4) and total points (12). His four assists are second on the Tusculum team and tied for eighth-most in the league.  He has accounted for two match-winning goals in TU victories against Lees-McRae (Sep. 25) and Mars Hill (Nov. 1).  For his 48-match career, Cervantes has totaled seven goals, six assists, 20 points with three match-winning goals.

Division II and III CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.

After starting the season 2-5-1, the Pioneers have rebounded to go 4-1-2 in their final seven contests to finish fourth in the SAC standings.  Tusculum (6-6-3), the defending SAC Tournament Champions, will host Anderson University this Sunday at 2 p.m. in a SAC Quarterfinal at Pioneer Field.
