Kvam scores overtime goal, Pioneers win 2-1 at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. --- Andreas Kvam scored the match-winning goal with 1:58 remaining in the first overtime as Tusculum defeated host Lenoir-Rhyne 2-1 Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action.

With the victory, the Pioneers (7-4-1, 4-2-1 SAC) earn an important three points and move into a tie for fourth place in the league standings (13 pts).

Tusculum improves its road record to an impressive 6-1 this season with its only set-back coming against now-No. 1 Pfeiffer.

Kvam broke the 1-1 deadlock scoring on a breakaway down the middle of the field and buried his third goal of the season and seal Tusculum's third victory in its last four outings.

Ricardo Da Silva put the Pioneers on the board in the 26th minute as he headed in a corner kick from Todd Fidler for a 1-0 TC lead.

The Bears picked up the equalizer in the 33rd minute when Ben Meredith headed in his fourth goal of 2015 on a corner kick from Leon Mueller to knot the match at 1-1.

Lenoir-Rhyne edged the Pioneers 19-16 in the shot differential, but the ledger was tied 7-7 in shots on goal. The contest was event statistically with 14 fouls called apiece, with six corners awarded to each squad.

Tusculum keeper Jorge Alvarez picked up the victory as he accounted for six saves on the night, while his L-R counterpart Zach King finished with five saves in going the distance.

Tusculum continues its three-match road swing on Saturday as the Pioneers make the short trip over Sam's Gap to face South Atlantic Conference foe Mars Hill for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Meares Stadium.
