Vital records 200th victory in Tusculum's 2-0 win at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Andreas Kvam knocked home the match-winner just before halftime and Jorge Alvarez recorded his second shutout of the season in Tusculum College's 2-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over Queens University of Charlotte Wednesday night at Dickson Field. It was the SAC men's soccer opener for both teams.

The victory was also the 200th career win for Tusculum head coach Allen Vital. In his 19 seasons as a collegiate coach (14 at Carson-Newman, 5 at Tusculum), Vital has amassed a 200-109-28 record.

Kvam recorded his second goal of the young season in the 43rd minute as he took a deflection from a Royals' defender and shot it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Tusculum lead.

Tusculum's Vasco Monteiro was credited with his first goal as a Pioneer at the 55:13 mark of the match to give TC a two-goal advantage.

Queens (2-2, 0-1 SAC) finished the match outshooting Tusculum by a 19-14 margin as Alvarez finished with eight saves on the night.

Royals' net-minder Sergio Lemus accounted for two saves in the losing effort for the home team.

Kvam led the Pioneers with three shots, including one on goal and another off the post. Jonathan Spicher came off the bench to post three shots, including one on frame. TC's Nathaniel Scere finished with a pair of shots, including one off the woodwork in the second half.

Tusculum held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks while the foul count was even at 11 each.

Tusculum (3-1, 1-0 SAC) will travel to Barton College this Saturday night for a 6 p.m. regional match against the Bulldogs in Wilson, North Carolina.
