Shupp, a native of Cranford, New Jersey, came to Tusculum after spending one season as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Division III Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania. Prior to that, Shupp was the defensive coordinator and goalie specialist at Division III Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia for two seasons.

From 2009 to 2012, Shupp was a four-year starting goalkeeper at Alvernia University in Reading, Pennsylvania, where he played under Carrington during the 2010 season. At Alvernia, Shupp was a two-year captain, twice named team Most Valuable Player and also twice earned conference Goalie of the Week honors. Shupp was also selected to the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team following his junior season, and set the school record for career saves with 765.

After earning a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Alvernia in 2012, Shupp spent one year at Union County College as an assistant coach before accepting the position at Piedmont. Shupp graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree from Piedmont in 2015, earning cum laude honors.
