Six-goal surge boosts Pioneers to 12-6 win over Alabama-Huntsville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Nate Wade scored three of his game-high four goals during a six-goal run to start the match as Tusculum defeated Alabama-Huntsville 12-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse action Friday night at Montgomery Bell Academy.

Liam Macdonald scored three goals and Dallas Wade contributed two goals and an assist for the Pioneers (2-2), who led 7-2 at halftime and outshot the Chargers (4-2) by a 40-29 margin in the game. Tusculum also killed off all six man-down opportunities it faced against UAH, which was led by two goals from Kevin Coppinger.

Nate Wade scored the opening goal of the match with just under five minutes gone in the first quarter, and added his second of the evening just over a minute and a half later to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Macdonald scored about a minute and a half later for a 3-0 Tusculum lead, and Dallas Wade pushed the Pioneers ahead 4-0 on a goal with 1:25 left in the opening quarter.

Goals 50 seconds apart from Nate Wade and Macdonald extended the Tusculum lead to 6-0 with two minutes gone in the second quarter, before Alabama-Huntsville got on the board with 9:35 left in the first half on a goal from Luke LeVette. Jacob Glen cut the Tusculum lead to 6-2 with 7:52 remaining in the half, before the Pioneers' Keegan Bell tallied with 6:41 to play in the half for a 7-2 Tusculum lead that the Pioneers carried all the way to halftime.

Dallas Wade and Ethan Bohannon scored 11 seconds apart early in the third quarter as the Pioneers went on top 9-2, with Coppinger getting his first of the game with 9:41 remaining in the third quarter for the Chargers. Nate Wade scored his fourth of the game with the man advantage with 7:19 left in the quarter, and Tusculum's 10-3 lead stood all the way into the fourth quarter.

Coppinger scored his second of the night with 10:51 lead to bring the Chargers within 10-4, and the Pioneers closed out their scoring on goals from Chris Ryan and Macdonald, the latter with 6:58 left. Emory Weaver and Nicholas Renta scored late goals for the Chargers to set the final margin.

Both teams finished with 24 ground balls in the match, with Tusculum's Andrew Kransberger leading all players with 10. Bohannon added four ground balls for the Pioneers and went 12-for-20 on faceoffs in the match, with three ground balls by Ethan Merrow and a pair of caused turnovers from Joel Edgar.

Nik Kubik had a team-high seven ground balls for the Chargers, and went 10-for-22 at the faceoff dot. UAH commmitted 19 turnovers and went 12-for-15 on clears, while the Pioneers had 15 turnovers and matched the Chargers on clears with 12 in 15 attempts.

Patrick Thomas played nearly 55 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and had four saves, while Ryan Pickering played the final 5:08 and made four saves. Kyle Siersma had four saves in the first three quarters for the Chargers, with Zak Welsh adding two stops in the fourth quarter.

Tusculum will return to the road on Wednesday with a match at seventh-ranked Limestone, beginning at 7 p.m.
