GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College registered several record-setting team and individual performances in a 27-4 victory over Emmanuel College in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (5-1) won their fifth straight contest while breaking six school records and equaling three more against the Lions (0-6). Tusculum outshot Emmanuel 62-17, scored seven man-up goals and received goals from 14 different players in the victory.
Chris Ryan set a school record with six goals and tied the program record for points in a game with seven along with Cam Rogers, who had two goals and a record-equaling five assists in the win. Ryan broke the record of five goals in a game set six previous times, while Ryan and Rogers equaled the mark of seven points set three on three previous occasions.
Ben Boyd had three goals and an assist and in the process became the first player in school history to surpass 100 career points, while Nate Wade also had three goals and an assist and Tyler Klarner had two goals and two assists for the Pioneers. Adrian Brown and Austin Vanderhoof also had two goals apiece for Tusculum, while Liam Macdonald had a goal and four assists and Dallas Wade added a goal and three helpers.
Tusculum set team single-game records for goals (27), assists (20), points (47), man-up goals (seven) and faceoff wins (25) while tying the mark for ground balls with 55. The Pioneers led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, 15-1 at halftime and 23-2 at the end of three quarters.
With his four points, Boyd increased his career total to 102 on 77 goals and 25 assists. The senior from Bel Air, Maryland becomes the first player in the program's four-year history to surpass the 100-point plateau.
Ryan scored four goals in a span of 7 minutes, 23 seconds of the first quarter, including three straight in 4 minutes, 19 seconds, as the Pioneers outshot the Lions 22-2 in the opening quarter. Boyd, Klarner and Nate Wade also scored in the opening period for the Pioneers, who built their lead to 8-0 before Emmanuel got on the board on a goal from Austin Brundage with 11:44 left in the first half.
Tusculum closed the first half with six straight goals, including two more from Ryan to give him six on the day. The Pioneers added three more goals in the first 90 seconds of the second half to go on top 18-1 with 13:31 left in the third quarter. Following a goal from Emmanuel's Tyler Machado, the Pioneers ended the third quarter with five straight goals, including two from Vanderhoof off feeds from Rogers.
The Pioneers tacked on four goals in the fourth quarter, two from Brown and one each from Rogers and Davis Heitzman. Rogers also had two assists to join Ryan with seven points on the afternoon, while his five assists in the match tied the school single-game record set in 2014.
Tusculum was the beneficiary of 12 penalties called against Emmanuel in the match, scoring seven times in 11 man-up opportunities. Seven different players scored the man-up goals for the Pioneers, with Rogers assisting on three of the goals and Macdonald two.
Alexander Kleinberg won 15-of-19 faceoffs for the Pioneers and finished with a team-high seven ground balls, while scoring his first goal of the season early in the third quarter. Macdonald added six ground balls and Brown had five for the Pioneers, who had 26 different players collect at least one ground ball in the match.
Roman Tavani led the Lions with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, but the Lions finished with 20 turnovers as a team. Tusculum had 17 turnovers in the game but just eight through the first three quarters. The Pioneers also went 12-for-13 on clears while the Lions were 12-for-20 on clear attempts, and Tusculum won 25 of the 33 faceoffs in the match.
Four different goalies played for the Pioneers and allowed one goal apiece, with Kevin Haggerty recording four saves in the first half. Ryan Pickering (one save), Will Bender (three saves) and Matthew Petraglia (zero saves) split the final 30 minutes in goal for the Pioneers. Luke Harris played all 60 minutes for the Lions, making 18 saves including 10 in the opening quarter.
Tusculum will be on the road Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Lees-McRae in a non-conference contest with the Bobcats.
