Upset bid falls short, Coker edges Tusculum 11-10 in overtime

HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- Shane Wilson netted the game-winning goal with 1:12 remaining in the first overtime period in leading the Coker College men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over visiting Tusculum College Friday afternoon.

The win extends the Cobras' seven-game winning streak moves Coker (8-3, 6-1 SAC) into sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Pioneers (3-7, 2-5 SAC) stayed neck and neck with the conference leaders as Tusculum led 6-5 at halftime and rallied with a pair of goals at the end of regulation including Mitch Chapman's equalizer with seven seconds on the clock to tie the game at 10-10 and send the game into overtime.

Nate Wade led the Pioneers with three goals, while Chris Ryan and Andrew Kransberger contributed two goals each. Ben Boyd, Dallas Wade and Chapman contributed one goal each.

Wilson finished the game with a hat trick, scoring both the first and last goals of the game. The game-winner came with just a minute left in the overtime period with an assist from Josh Smith.

John Bretton netted six goals on 13 shots to pace the Cobra offense. Scoring the other two goals for the Cobras was Josh Wassum. Mike Martiello finished the game with four assists, while Rylee Marsh picked up a single helper.

Tusculum accounted for 22 ground balls in the game, including five from Jake Smith and four from Coogan Lethco.

TC's Kevin Haggerty notched 14 saves of the 25 shots he faced, while Coker goalie Tim Ryan made seven stops against Tusculum's 17 shots on frame.

The Pioneers return home this Tuesday night when they host North Greenville University for a 7 p.m. contest at Pioneer Field.
