Pioneers climb one spot, finish third at Rendleman Invitational

SALISBURY, N.C. --- The Tusculum University men's golf team finished with a two-day score of 598 including Tuesday's final round 298 to finish third at the Richard Rendleman Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole tournament was being held at the Country Club of Salisbury and hosted by Catawba College.

The Pioneers finished four strokes behind Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne University who finished the event with team scores of 594.  Lenoir-Rhyne won the team tournament crown in a playoff.

Tusculum senior Liam Sweeney was the low Pioneer for the week as he finished with 75-72=147 to tie for sixth place.  Bennett Noe shaved nine shots off his opening round 80 and finished with a 71 to tie for 13^th place with 151. Teammate Kyle Engelbert also finished 13^th at 75-76=151.  Nicholas Marchese placed 21^st with 74-79=153 while Mark Healy rounded out the TU scoring with 76-79=155 to finish 30^th.

In the team scoring, Livingstone College finished fourth with 600, followed by Belmont Abbey College (602), Fayetteville State (612), UVa-Wise (618), Belmont Abbey B (662) and Winston-Salem St. (922).

Catawba's Tanner Bibey won medalist honors with 68-71=139, winning by three strokes over runner-up Cole Sutherland (70-72=142) of Lenoir-Rhyne, who was playing as an individual competitor. Rounding out the All-Tournament Team are Georg Hartmann of Lenoir-Rhyne who finished third with 72-72=144, while Livingstone's Titus Okwong (74-71=145) and Catawba's Chase Clayton (70-75=145) tied for fourth.

Tusculum matches its best ever finish at the Rendleman Invitational, equaling its third-place showings in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

The Pioneers return to action Mar. 15-17 as they compete at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tennessee.
