Pioneers finish third at Tusculum Invitational

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Pioneer men's golf team posted a final round 301 to shoot 907 and finish third at the 25th annual Tusculum Invitational held at the par-71, 6,763-yard Link Hills Country Club.

The Pioneers were third after every round and finish 21 strokes behind tournament winner Walters State.  The Senators finished with 886 including Sunday's 287 to win by nine shot over runner-up Spartanburg Methodist (895).  Walters State wins its second TC Invitational crown and first since claiming the inaugural event in 1994.

Shorter finished fourth with 917 while the Tusculum B team was fifth with 926.  Bluefield College was sixth with 941, followed by Union, Ky. (953), UVa-Wise (954), Cleveland State, Tenn. (960) and Bluefield State (1099).

This year marked the first time the Tusculum Invitational was a 54-hole event in the tournament's 25-year history.

Caleb Brown of Spartanburg Methodist led the event wire-to-wire to claim medalist honors as he finished with a two-under par total 211, including Sunday's final round 70 (-1).  Walters State's Alex Hodge finished runner-up with 213 and carded the lowest round of the weekend with Sunday's three-under par 68.  Trey Tobias of Walters State finished third with 217 (+4).

The Tusculum duo of David Whinery and Brandon Alexander finished fourth and fifth, respectively.  Whinery, who was playing on the Tusculum B team, posted rounds of 74, 73 and 71 to finish with 218.  Alexander rounded out the All-Tournament team (top-five) by carding a 54-hole total 219.

The Tusculum A team, Anthony Bolden finished seventh with 74-74-77=225, while Liam Sweeney finished 13th with 74-78-78=231.  TC's Bennett Noe tied for 29th place with 237 including a final round 72 (+1).  Trey Blevins rounded out the TC scoring with 247 to finish 39th.

On the Tusculum B team, Carter Simon tied for 14th place with 232, Hunter Chandley placed 29th with 237 and Matthew Kowalski finished 32nd with 239.

The Pioneers will wrap up the regular season schedule Apr. 3-4 at the Tennessee River Rumble in Loudon, Tennessee. It will be TC's final tune-up before next month's South Atlantic Conference Championship.
