LELAND, N.C. --- The Tusculum men's golf team posted scores of 310 and 308 to card a 618 and is in ninth place after day one action of the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate.  The Pioneers are the lone NCAA Division II team represented at the predominant Division I field.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the par-72, 6,850-yard Cape Fear National at Brunswick Forest and hosted by Appalachian State University.

Tusculum's David Whinery is tied for 15th place with a 36-hole total of 147.  Whinery opened the day with a two-under par 70 in a round that included five birdies, 10 pars and three bogeys.  He shot 77 in his second round on Sunday as he was five over for his first 13 holes, but finished the final five holes even par and is three-over for the tournament.

Whinery is seven shots out of first place which is currently held by Appalachian State's Tripp Summerlin, who fired a four-under par 68 in the morning round and shot 72 in the afternoon for his 140 and leads by one stroke over Nick Thornton (73-68=141) of Texas Arlington.

UT Arlington boasts four of the top-five golfers on the individual leaderboard as the Mavericks shot an eight-under par 568 and leads by 17 strokes over second place Jacksonville State (585).  Appalachian State is third with 593 followed by USC Beaufort (594), Loyola-Chicago (597), Virginia Commonwealth (601), Robert Morris (604), Wright State (615), Tusculum (618), North Carolina Central (637), LaSalle (641), North Carolina A&T (655) and Hampton (680).

TC's Brandon Alexander got off to a tough start posting an 81 for his opening round, but rebounded nicely with an even par 72 in the afternoon round.  He double-bogeyed his first hole of the second round, but answered with birdies on three of his next six holes to get to one-under par on the scorecard.  He posted two bogeys on his inward nine but came up with a birdie on his next to last hole to get back to level par and climb 25 spots on the leaderboard from his opening round and is tied for 34th place with 81-72=153 (+9).

Anthony Bolden is tied for 38th position with his 79-76=155, while Liam Sweeney is tied for 61st with 83-80-163.  Bennett Noe shot 85-83=168 and is in sole possession of 67th place.
