ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum University return specialist Thurlow Wilkins has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
Wilkins, a redshirt freshman from Avon Park, Florida, established a TU single-game record with his 191 kickoff return yards in Saturday's loss at Newberry College. He broke the previous record of 189 yards set by former TU All-American Ricardo Colclough in 2003 against Morehouse College.
Included in his 191 yards was a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half, the seventh-longest in program history. He also added 13 rushing yards to finish the day with 204 all-purpose yards.
On the season, Wilkins is averaging 35.8 yards on his 12 kick-off returns, which is on pace to be a new school record. His average also leads the league and is ranked sixth in the country.
Tusculum (1-3, 1-1 SAC) returns to action this Saturday when the Pioneers host nationally-ranked Wingate University for Homecoming. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m.
