Tusculum's Edwards to particpate at NCAA, NFL Coaches Academy this week

TAMPA, Fla. --- Tusculum University assistant football coach Cody Edwards has been selected to participate in the NCAA and NFL Coaches Academy this week in Tampa, Florida.

The academy provides current, full-time college football coaches at NCAA member schools the opportunity to expand their knowledge and insight into the world of college football coaching.

During the two-day academy (Feb. 6-7, 2019), the NCAA leadership development staff and the National Football League Player Engagement are able to educate and train selected participants in a variety of areas that encourage effective coaching and improve student-athlete well-being at both the college and professional levels. Topical education and conversation during the academy may include: effective communication with campus and community constituents; the importance of building culture focused on the overall success of the student-athletes both on and off the field; budget management of a football program; coaching strategies and philosophies.

Edwards joined the Tusculum football staff this past summer and coached the TU safeties and served as running game coordinator.  He also serves as the program's travel coordinator.

Edwards came to Tusculum after serving as the co-defensive coordinator at Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Florida.  He also mentored the safeties and SAM linebackers with the Seahawks while also serving as academic coordinator and summer camp coordinator.

He served the 2016 campaign as defensive coordinator at The John Cooper School and was the run game and defensive coordinator at Royal Palm Beach High School for two seasons.

The Haysi, Virginia native coached safeties and was the assistant secondary coach at John Carroll University in 2013.  While at the University Heights, Ohio school he helped John Carroll to a 9-2 record and a berth to the NCAA Playoffs.  He mentored three All-Conference players including one All-American.

Edwards served as an intern on the football staff at the University of Tennessee during the 2012 season.  He served as a liaison for all NFL and professional scouts and the Vol for Life Program.  He also aided the football operations staff and worked with the university's summer football camps.

He is a 2010 graduate of the University of Virginia's College at Wise where he earned Bachelor of Science degree in business administration while also lettering on the football team for the Cavaliers.
