Pioneers rally with 9 unanswered runs for season's first win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --- The Tusculum Pioneers scored five runs in the seventh inning as TU rallied to a 9-5 win Sunday night over Palm Beach Atlantic in college baseball action.

Sunday was the completion of Friday's suspended game which was halted due to rain with the Sailfish leading 4-0 in the middle of the fourth inning.

PBA added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth when Sebastian Salado singled home Houck as the Sailfish led 5-0.

The Pioneers (1-2) scored their first runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Alvaro Valdez blasted a two-out, two-run homer down the right field line to cut the deficit to 5-2.

All five of TU's runs in the seventh inning came with two outs including a RBI double by Fuzzy Furr and a game-tying two-run double from Jaden Steagall. Luis Ezra scored from third base on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run and Steagall plated the fifth run on the frame thanks to a PBA fielding error.

Tusculum added two insurance runs in the eighth inning when Daulton Martin put down a bunt single to drive in Jake Wapinsky from third base and Furr scored on another error by the Sailfish to lead 9-5.

TU reliever Carter Linton retired the Fish in order in the ninth inning including a pair of strikeouts to seal the victory. Reliever Trevor Lloyd picked up the victory as he went 3.1 innings, scattered five hits with one run, one walk and one strikeout. Trent Collins scattered a hit, two walks in his 1.2 innings of relief two strikeouts.

Furr finished the game with two hits, while Steagall and Wapinsky had two hits apiece as well.

Tusculum will close out its Florida road swing on Monday when they play at Embry-Riddle for a 2 p.m. contest.
