Pioneers listed in final NCAA baseball statistics

INDIANAPOLIS --- Tusculum University pitcher Charles Hall led the nation in strikeouts while infielder Trey Hinton was tops in the country in base on balls per game with the release of the final 2019 NCAA Division II statistics.

Four Pioneers are listed individually in this year's statistical ranking while Tusculum was ranked in eight team categories.

Hall, a senior right-hander from Dumfries, Virginia, was listed in four statistical categories.  His 148 strikeouts are the second-most in program history and fourth in South Atlantic Conference history.  His 14.86 strikeouts per nine innings pitched average was tops in the league and fourth in NCAA II.  In March, he established a new Division II single-game record with his 22-strikeout performance against Queens University of Charlotte.  In his 13 starts in 2019, he posted 10 or more strikeouts on 10 occasions, was a consensus All-Region selection and was tabbed the SAC Pitcher of the Year.

Hall was also ranked 30th in the country in earned run average (2.31) and 36th in hits allowed per nine innings pitched (6.62).  He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 33rd round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and is currently on the roster for the AZL Athletics Gold Team.

Hinton, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee, led Division II with his 1.26 bases on balls per game average.  His 49 total walks were seventh in the land and third in the league.  His walk total was also the fourth-most in a TU single-season.

Two-time All-America second baseman Daulton Martin was listed in four categories including third in base on balls (52 – 1st in SAC), seventh in doubles (22 – 1st in SAC), 16th in on-base percentage (.518) and 31st in runs scored (61).  The Lancaster, Pennsylvania junior was a consensus first team All-American this year as he led TU with this .362 batting average along with eight home runs and 112 total bases.

Sophomore infielder Bryson Ford (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Pioneers with his 26 stolen bases, which were second in the SAC and 31st in the nation.  His stolen base total is also the third highest in program history.

The Tusculum pitching staff finished fifth in NCAA II with its 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings pitched average and 38th in hits allowed per nine innings pitched (8.82).  TU was also 13th in bases on balls (278), 19th in hit by pitch (81), 22nd in stolen bases (106), 28th in on-base percentage (.406), 38th in scoring (7.5 rpg) and 44th in sacrifice flies (26).

Tusculum and first-year head coach Brandon Steele finished the campaign with a 30-21 overall record and finished tied for third place in the conference.  For TU it was the program's 16th season with 30 or more wins in the last 17 years.
