GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum baseball team totaled 34 runs, 28 hits and drew 23 walks as TC posted a pair of wins Monday in the day two of the Pioneer Double-Round Robin at Pioneer Park. Tusculum erupted for 21 hits and 13 walks in a 25-12 win over Notre Dame College (Ohio). TC got stellar pitching performances from Zach Sanders and Charles Hall in the night-cap in a 9-2 win over Davis & Elkins.
TC sophomore shortstop Daulton Martin extended his hitting streak to 22 consecutive games as he went 2-for-3 against Notre Dame and posted a single in his at bat in the second game against Davis & Elkins.
Tusculum improves to 6-5 on the season and the Pioneers will play their fifth game in three days when they host regional foe Lander for a 5 p.m. contest at Pioneer Park.
Tusculum 25, Notre Dame (Ohio) 12
Tusculum led wire-to-wire while establishing several offensive season highs in a 25-12 win over the Notre Dame Falcons (1-3). The Pioneers' 25-run outburst is the second largest in recorded school history and just two behind the TC-best 27 posted against Pfeiffer in 2010. Tusculum's 23 RBI are the third-most in the school record book while its 13 bases on balls are tied for the fifth-most by the Pioneers.
The Pioneers (13) and Falcons (12) combined for 25 walks in the contest. The dozen walks allowed by Tusculum and Notre Dame are tied for the most in school history, matching the 12 surrendered to Davis & Elkins in 2007.
Fourteen different Pioneers finished with at least a hit, including six that had multiple-hit outings. Logan McMahan enjoyed a stellar game as went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and a double. Garrett Goldberg added a 2-for-4 effort with three runs scored and a RBI. Jarel McDade went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run for his four RBI, while Garrett Dupuis belted his first home run of the year.
TC starter Laurys Diaz (1-0) went five innings, allowed three runs (two earned), six hits, one walk and three strikeouts to pick up his first win in the Black and Orange.
Notre Dame finished with 10 hits, including Ryan Kozmynka's 3-for-5 effort with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Lukas Thompson also went 2-of-3 with three RBI.
Tusculum jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with McDade's two-run double being the big hit of the frame. The Falcons got back into the game with a three-run second inning. But the Pioneers bounced back with a run in the second, four in the third, seven in the fourth, three in the sixth and six more in the seventh.
Tusculum 9, Davis & Elkins 2
Zach Sanders pitched six splendid innings as Tusculum avenged a loss yesterday with Monday's 9-2 win over the Senators. Sanders allowed one unearned run on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in his six innings of work. Charles Hall took over in the seventh and pitched the final three innings to earn his first save as a Pioneer. Hall allowed two hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts.
Both teams to advantage of errors in the first inning to be tied 1-1 after one frame.
In the second inning, TC plated three unearned runs thanks to an error and a passed ball to lead 4-1. TC added a run in the third on Evans' RBI double and added two more in the fourth frame, both coming in on wild pitches. Tusculum added two insurance runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Montgomery, Skeen and Evans each finished with two hits each for the Pioneers.
