Beach volleyball posts wins over C-N, EKU in day one of round robin

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's beach volleyball team posted a pair of wins Saturday in day one of round-robin match ups with Carson-Newman University and Eastern Kentucky University.

Tusculum opened with a 5-0 win over the host Eagles and followed with 3-2 victory over EKU to improve to 6-9 on the season.

Tusculum 5, Carson-Newman 0

The Pioneers didn't drop a set as Tusculum posted a 5-0 sweep over Carson-Newman.  The TU duo of Katelyn Weems and Jordan Zaleski put the Pioneers on the board with their 21-19, 21-9 win at the fifth flight over Taryn Nichols and Lexy Headley.

TU's Marissa Morgan and Lana Vujosevic notched the second point with a 21-16, 25-23 win at the third flight.  The match-clincher came at the No. 4 tandem as Lydia Collins and Catherine Clingan won 21-19, 21-8 to seal the victory.

Melissa Mazur and Haley Davis won 21-11, 21-15 at the top-flight while Skyellar Hall and Gabby Gray were victorious 21-13, 21-17 at No. 2 doubles as the Pioneers claimed its third win of the season over Carson-Newman.

Tusculum 3, Eastern Kentucky 2

Three of the five matches went three-sets with the TU duo of Mazur and Davis claiming the deciding point as the Pioneers prevailed over Eastern Kentucky, 3-2.

Tusculum scored the first point of the match as Weems and Zaleski won 21-12, 21-23, 15-7 as the Pioneers led 1-0.  EKU tied the contest at 1-1 with a three-set win at the fourth flight.  The Colonels' Rachel Woody and Kennedy Wilson held off a rally by the TU team of Collins and Clingan but the EKU pairing won 21-8, 15-21, 15-9.

The Pioneers broke the tie with a convincing straight set win by Morgan and Vujosevic by a count of 21-7, 21-3 at the third flight as TU led 2-1.

Mazur and Davis posted their second win of the day with a 23-21, 21-17 win over Dena Tekavec and Jovana Bulatovic.

Day two of the round-robin will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday as the Pioneers have a rematch with EKU.  Tusculum will face Carson-Newman later in the day at 3 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
