GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University track & field high jumper Guillaume Devries and Mia Long have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week. Long earns her second Athlete of the Week honor this year.
Devries (Valenciennes, France) was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet at the ETSU Invitational Saturday afternoon after provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. Devries competed in a field of 14 jumpers and passed until 1.95 meters, then cleared each of his first four jumps to clinch first place with a height of 2.06 meters. Devries continued on and made 2.10 meters on his third attempt to lock down the second-best jump in the South Atlantic Conference this season.
Long (Ann Arbor, Mich.) averaged 19.0 points and 7.5 steals as the Pioneers picked up wins over Mars Hill (79-46) and Coker (71-57) to extend their winning streak to seven games. Long scored 15 points and had seven steals in the win over Mars Hill, then shot 7-for-12 from the field and hit a career-high three three-pointers in the victory over Coker. Long, the NCAA Division II leader in steals per game, set a personal best against Coker with eight steals in the win. For the week, Long shot 13-for-24 (54.2 percent) from the field and went 4-for-6 from three-point range and 8-for-12 at the foul line.
The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
