GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University basketball standouts Brandon Mitchell and Yolizma Cupidan have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.
Mitchell scored a career-high 20 points in Tusculum's hard-fought 77-74 loss at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. Mitchell, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, shot 8-of-11 from the floor and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Pioneers. He also tallied his team-leading 16th blocked shot of the season to give him 52 for his career which are already the fifth-most in program history. He is averaging 8.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season and his 1.6 blocked shots per game average leads the South Atlantic Conference.
Cupidan scored in double figures in three victories for the Pioneers last week (3-0), averaging 14.3 points per game. The Ocoee, Florida senior had 13 points, four rebounds and four steals in a 94-36 win over Bluefield State on Wednesday, finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists against Livingstone on Thursday, then scored a season-high 16 points and had seven rebounds in a 66-45 win at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. Cupidan averaged 5.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game while shooting 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the field in the wins, which extended Tusculum's winning streak to five straight games.
The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
