Charkoutsakis, McMillen named Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for November

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University soccer defender Georgios Charkoutsakis and cross country runner Nicole McMillen have been named the Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for November.

Charkoutsakis, a junior from Heraklion, Greece, captained the TU men's soccer team to a 3-1 record during the month including a pair of wins in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament semifinal and final to capture the Pioneers' second SAC title in three years and a league-leading seventh overall.

He scored the match-winning goal in TU's 2-0 semifinal victory over arch-rival Carson-Newman leading up to a 2-1 victory over Anderson in the championship match and punch the Pioneers' ticket for the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Charkoutsakis scored the match-winning goal with 6:10 left in the contest in Tusculum's thrilling 3-2 win over Queens University of Charlotte in the opening match of the NCAA II Southeast Regional.  TU would be defeated 2-1 against region host and nationally top-ranked Young Harris.

Both of his goals in November proved to be the match-winner in each of those two contests.  He finished the season with three goals and one assist for his seven points and earning him a spot on the All-SAC second team.

The two-time All-SAC selection has recorded six goals and four assists in his 52-match career with the Pioneers.

McMillen, a senior from Pickering, Ontario, Canada, finished fifth in both the South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championship in Spartanburg, South Carolina and two weeks later at the NCAA II Southeast Region Championship in Oakwood, Georgia.

She has competed in just two cross country races in her Tusculum career due to her spot as a starting defender on the Tusculum women's soccer team. Last season, McMillen joined the first-year Tusculum track and field program and finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the SAC Indoor Championship.

With the 2018 Tusculum soccer season over, McMillen was entered in the SAC Championship on Nov. 3 and finished fifth overall with a time of 22:26.2 in her first collegiate race and garnered a spot on the All-SAC first team. She went to the NCAA II Southeast Regional on Nov. 17 and placed fifth overall in a time of 22:29.19, earning her a trip to nationals and first-team All-Region status.

McMillen will run in the 2018 NCAA National Championship on Saturday (Dec. 1) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  She is the first Pioneer to run at nationals since Amanda Musick participated for the third time in her career in 2004, and she joins Sue Lewis (2001) as the only other Tusculum runners to compete at the national championship.

The Tusculum Student-Athlete of the Month Award is sponsored by Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar of Greeneville.  The Applebee's Student-Athlete of the Month Award honors one male and one female student-athlete each month from an in-season sport during the 2018-2019 academic year, recognizing their hard work, effort and performance.
